What countries are covered under European travel insurance?
When it comes to UK-based travel insurance providers, European travel insurance is typically referring to a travel insurance policy which covers you for travel in the following destinations.
EU member states
All EU member states are typically covered by a European travel insurance policy. This includes the major tourist destinations across the continent. European Travel insurance is not to be confused with EU travel insurance.
Some examples of popular European travel destinations include.
- Spain
- France
- Italy
- Greece
- Portugal
Non-EU member states
While most European nations fall under the EU, not all countries in continental Europe are member states. These locations include the following.
- Norway
- Monaco
- Switzerland
- Liechtenstein
- San Marino
- Andorra
Travel outside of Europe
Whilst these locations technically fall outside of continental Europe, some European travel insurance policies may cover you for the following.
- Turkey
- Tunisia
- Egypt
- Cyprus
- Morocco
- Iceland
Is Africa covered under European travel insurance?
Select countries in North Africa bordering Europe are often covered under European travel insurance. Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia are countries often covered as an insurable destination under a European travel insurance policy. Medical treatment in these countries will not be covered by your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) however so ensure you have appropriate medical cover in place. A Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) will also often not cover you as these destinations are technically outside of Europe.
Do I need European travel insurance if I have a GHIC card?
In short, yes. A GHIC card will mean you can get access to the same level of care that local residents receive from state-provided healthcare. A GHIC card will only cover you for the minimum necessary treatment however. It will not cover you for private treatment, repatriation costs, cruise trips or search and rescue. There are different rules for UK nationals visiting Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland. For more info on how the GHIC works, visit GOV.UK.
Knowing your insurance policy
To be sure that you are covered for the countries you want to visit by your European holiday insurance, always check your policy details. If it is not clear whether one of your travel countries is covered by a potential policy confirm with the insurer before making a purchase.
