Based in the charming coastal town of Side near Antalya, this trip combines golden beaches, Roman ruins, friendly local culture, and an unforgettable day exploring Green Canyon and traditional villages. From bustling bazaars in Manavgat to peaceful harbour sunsets and excellent-value local wines, this guide shares exactly what to see, how to get there, and why this Turkish coastal escape delivers remarkable experiences for curious travellers and wine lovers alike.
Arrival and First Impressions
We arrived late at night at Antalya Airport, pleasantly surprised at how smooth and efficient everything felt after a long day of travel. Transfers were well organised, luggage appeared quickly, and before long we were on our way through warm Mediterranean darkness toward our base for the week.
Our home was Sun City — comfortable, welcoming, and perfectly located for exploring independently. Check-in was quick, friendly and reassuringly uncomplicated. Exactly what one hopes for when arriving close to midnight.
By morning, sunshine and blue skies confirmed we had arrived somewhere rather special.
Exploring Side on Foot 🚶♂️
Side is one of those destinations that rewards wandering. No strict plans required. Just comfortable shoes, curiosity, and perhaps a sunhat.

Long esplanades stretch beside the sea, perfect for slow morning walks or sunset strolls. One of the most touching sights is the number of stray cats — and how beautifully they are cared for. Local volunteers feed them daily, providing water, shelter and medical care. The cats themselves seem entirely relaxed, sunbathing confidently like permanent residents.
The beaches are wide and golden, kept remarkably clean and inviting. Gentle waves, warm sand and open horizons make it very easy to lose track of time. And then come the sunsets… glowing skies shifting through gold, coral and deep amber. Every evening felt different. Every evening felt unforgettable.
Ancient History at Every Turn
Side is not simply a beach destination — it is an open-air museum where history sits quietly beside everyday life.

The dramatic seafront columns of the Temple of Apollo and Athena date back to the 2nd century AD. Standing at the water’s edge, they glow beautifully at sunset and remain one of the most iconic sights along Turkey’s Mediterranean coast.
Nearby, the vast Side Ancient Theatre once held around 15,000 spectators. Unlike many Roman theatres built into hillsides, this one was constructed entirely on arches — an impressive engineering feat. Standing at the top tiers today offers sweeping views across the ancient city.

The surrounding Side Antik Kenti reveals streets, baths, temples and civic buildings scattered through the town. One moment you are walking past Roman columns, the next you are browsing souvenirs or ordering ice cream. Past and present exist side by side without ceremony.

At the waterfront, the lively Side Harbour and Marina offers scenic views of fishing boats, excursion vessels and cafés overlooking the sea. It is a wonderful place to pause, watch the light change and enjoy the relaxed rhythm of coastal life.
Local Life, Flavours and Everyday Discoveries
Side is full of small pleasures that never appear in guidebooks but shape the travel experience.

Shops selling beautifully packaged flavoured teas line the streets — apple, pomegranate, herbal blends and more. Sampling is enthusiastically encouraged. The town’s name is believed to originate from an ancient word for pomegranate, symbolising fertility and abundance. You see the fruit everywhere — in décor, drinks and souvenirs.
There were spontaneous moments too. A quick haircut. Watching an energetic street cycle race sweep through town. Sitting in the shade, sipping strong Turkish coffee served with impressive seriousness.

And, of course, excellent food. One particularly welcoming find was Ristorante Italiano, a relaxed and friendly spot where generous meals and warm conversation came easily. Over delicious döner kebabs and other comforting dishes, the owner recommended a day trip to Green Canyon at a very reasonable price.
We didn’t hesitate.
Day Trip to Green Canyon 🚐
Our transport arrived early — a wonderfully characterful pink off-road bus that looked like it had lived several adventurous lives already. Spirits were high from the start.

The journey led inland toward the spectacular Oymapinar Dam, one of the largest reservoirs in the region and the heart of the Green Canyon landscape.
Boat Trip Through the Canyon 🚤
The water is a deep emerald green, surrounded by steep forested cliffs that rise dramatically from the shoreline. The atmosphere is peaceful, almost cinematic. The scale of the landscape makes conversation soften naturally — everyone simply looks and absorbs.
Traditional Village Visit 🫓
Nearby, we visited a small traditional village where locals prepared enormous pancakes cooked on hot stone surfaces. The method is simple, the flavours comforting, and the experience delightfully authentic.
Stop at the Manavgat Waterfall 💧

We also visited the beautiful Manavgat Waterfall, famous for its wide, powerful cascade flowing across a broad rock shelf. The sound is mesmerising, and the surrounding gardens offer shaded seating and scenic viewpoints. A perfect pause in the day’s adventure.
With an excellent guide, beautiful scenery and a relaxed pace, the trip felt outstanding value. By late afternoon, we returned to our hotel, tired but content — and very ready for a cold beer.
Local Bus Adventure to Manavgat 🚌
The following day we explored independently, taking a local bus to Manavgat.
The main attraction: the vast and lively Manavgat Market. One of the region’s largest bazaars, it is colourful, energetic and endlessly fascinating. Fresh produce, spices, textiles, clothing, household goods and souvenirs fill row after row of stalls. Bargaining is expected, smiles are plentiful, and the atmosphere is wonderfully vibrant.
After the market, we wandered beside the peaceful Manavgat River, shaded by leafy trees and lined with moored boats. A graceful bridge spans the water, creating a calm and scenic contrast to the bustling market.
A perfect way to slow down.
Departure and Farewell ✈️
Too soon, it was time to return to the airport for the journey home. Transfers were smooth, the week felt full, and seven unforgettable sunsets stayed firmly in memory.
This was a destination that delivered exceptional experiences without extravagant costs — a truly excellent self-catering escape and remarkable value for money.
Highly recommended.

Sip of the Week 🍷
Doluca VINEA Shiraz Kalecik Karasi 2023

A wonderfully approachable local red that delivers far more than its modest price suggests. Smooth, balanced and easy-drinking, it combines the spice of Shiraz with the softer, fruit-forward character of Kalecik Karasi.
Expect ripe berries, gentle warmth and a velvety finish that makes second glasses extremely likely. It pairs beautifully with grilled dishes and relaxed holiday evenings.
Excellent value. Highly enjoyable. Definitely worth discovering.
